The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball season is fast approaching, and we’re continuing our player profiles for each scholarship player. Let’s hear about a player going into his second season with the Orange: Maliq Brown.

Position: Forward

Class: Sophomore

Vitals: 6’8”, 222 lbs.

Stats (2022-23): Averaged 5.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in his first year with the Orange.

Strengths/Weaknesses: As a freshman, Brown was among the Orange’s bench players who rotated in games. However, when given the opportunity to play he displayed strong hustle and defensive skills while also working hard for rebounds. He was never far from the hoop and constantly finished at the rim. Despite being a reserve for most of the season, he finished second on the team in rebounding.

Ceiling: Brown impresses with his defensive skills and rebounding for the Orange. His tenacity on the court earns him increased playing time in rotation. Brown’s size allows him to finish at the rim and guard the opposing team’s best perimeter player. Ideally, he’ll also be able to defend 1-through-5 as a versatile wing defender.

Floor: Brown’s lack of perimeter shooting could prevent him from seeing minutes off the bench. He is primarily utilized as an on-ball defender during press situations and to add grit against larger foes.
